Sorry if this topic has been covered before, maybe I am in the wrong section also.
I will be soon needing to upgrade power, currently have a nearly stock 1JZ VVTi 5Sp manual that has 250 RWHP. Car weighs 3100 Lbs and feels slow.
Before I invest into an irreversable upgrade for the 1J VVTi engine I am now seriously considering to swap the entire engine out to a 2JZ 6sp manual.
It seems like the cost of big turbo upgrading a 2J is basically the same as a 1J but for about 50 to 100 HP more across the board. For sure I will have additional initial costs for the 2J swap, but the 1J can be sold to offset. I estimate I will get another 40 RWHP just doing the swap, OK its a relatively big investment for only 40 HP, but reading through the BPU furum, future upgrades will yield much more power.
People say the 1J revs higher reliably but I don't think its an issue for a road driven and occasional 1/4 mile car.
My question is, if I need 450 to 500 RWHP in a road driven car, how much more usable is 500 RWHP when given out be a 2JZ six speed compared with 500 RWHP given out by a 1JZ five speed ?
My gues is that it will be much better because of milder tuning, fatter torque curve and worth the extra initial investment but setting cost asside would like to hear any comments or pros and cons.
No problem about the fitting, Chassis is not Supra. Main question is how does a 500 HP 2JZ compare to a 500 Hp 1JZ, drivability? Mid range? Lag? High Rev-abilty? Ideal thing would be to look at dyno read outs but its difficult to get hold of exact comparison like this.
I drove a stock 2JZ GTE yesterday, OK it had a little more torque mid range but not a big power difference, so it was not encouraging but this was stock. Need to know upgrades compare.
Why would Mr Death just put a single turbo upgrade in and not swap for a 2J assuming economics work out the same? Surely 2J has more potential or does 2J have only very marginal advantage?
The 1JZ is very good, the 2JZ is better. If you can, go 2JZ... providing you have bundles of cash to throw at it afterwards to get the performance you require.

I think youd be happy if you just put a big turbo on your car and modded it, you have a much greater initial startup, especially since your 1j is in and running, if you want 500rwhp, you can do that with lots of stuff, the 1j will be plenty fast, you have to put probably more than a few grand to get the 2jz and 6 spd, you maybe get 2 grand for your engine and trans, then you have to make it go in and work, then you start buying parts, then you start tuning, your car woudl be down for god knows how long, there will be stuff to fix and replace like there is always with swaps, i say might as well just dump your 5 thousand dollars into your car.
