Hello everyone, I have a bpu++ 94TT supra with about 120,000 miles and the turbos just died on me the other day. Purchasing the bpu parts from suprastore over a year ago, I deciced to come back and check out the new site for solutions. Not knowing much about cars, I took the supra to the toyota dealership and they wanted to charge me $7,000 for 2 new turbos. Would it be cheaper to buy 2 aftermarket turbos or go to a single turbo? Keep in mind that I will most likely need to buy some type of intercooler or oil cooler; the guy working on my car at the toyota dealership said it died due to oil getting into the turbos. I see that the AEM EMS is popular now, would the addition of the EMS and a single turbo be a good replacement? Any thoughts and/or comments are welcomed

you can add a single turbo job for 7k-10k. just look around and pick and choice the parts that work best for you. maby a t04 turbo or a greddy turbo, depending on what you want. but dont forget that your stock fuel is done at 500 rwhp. also once you replace the turbo you will be replacing all the oil lines and everything, also the seals in the stock turbos probly just went bad and allowed oil to leak. probly nothing wrong with the oil system in teh car as is

Thanks for the reply Zero_one. I would rather not spend that much money on the supra right now. My need for speed has diminished since making my car bpu and right now all I want is something to replace the turbos and make sure that nothing will go bad in the near future. I simply dont have the time that I once had to spend playing with the car. Would the addition of an intercooler help prevent something like this from happening in the future?

Intercoolers, stainless steel braided hose lines, and oil catch cans all help. Your current intercooler should be doing the job if it is working properly and your not boosting too high. But....the entire cooling system is very important yes. You might want an upgraded intercooler/radiator etc. Back on topic....Your best help comes from you knowing about your car, how to maintain it, and how to do the work on it yourself....it can save time and it always saves an enormous amount of money. I need to get better at working on my car as well.

My turbos, started leaking oil at about 285,000 miles. They were blowing smoke and I had them rebuilt for $2,000 a piece. Since you don't seem to want new turbos, maybe this is an option. Just thought you might want to know. I currently have 369,000 miles and haven't rebuilt them since. (knock on wood). I have a bpu+ and run about 15 psi several times a week. Looking back I probably would have installed a new turbo. But I had just bought a new toyota engine. You have a diffucult choice, good luck, Casey.

I should have been clearer, I replaced the block around, 265,000 miles. And in fact I commute from the Florida Keys to Miami 6 days a week. Which is over 100 miles a day, plus driving in Miami sometimes up to 200 miles a day. I actually think the block went out sooner than it should have (the mech. showed that the pistons started to wobble from the wear). Now I change the oil every two to three weeks. Toyotas are the best. Take it easy and have a nice day, Casey

Your best option is to find a set of good used stock twins. Check the for sale section on all the sites (including thepartstrader.com). Many people upgrade when they have perfectly fine stock twins. They go for $500 to $1000 for the pair.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I am just going to sell the car instead of fix it. Do you think it would be best to sell as is, or put on some good used stock twin turbos and then sell?

quote: If you decide to put a set of twins on it I just put a single on my car. The twins had a total of 40k miles of which 4k were BPU miles the first 3k were 16 psi boost and the last 1k miles were at 18 psi boost, ofcourse not for the full 1k miles. The turbo's still seem to be in great condition and I would sell them with all the other stock twin stuff for 600. If you just want the turbo's themselves I would sell them for 500. My email is rviscosi@maximatech.com, just let me know. 93 BPU+++ SupraTT 11.53@120.98 |

Just get a single. Prices are so low now that it would be a shame not to. The SP budget kit is $2,500 and bolts up to the car. It utilizes the stock MAF, IC and fuel system. If you wanted a full kit the BL kit is only $3500. Buyers don't want to hear that the turbos have been replaced because they assume you beat the car. Also, you will save in labor if you go with a single. It is a lot easier to install a single than reinstall the stockers. Just my 2 cents.
