I am BPU+++, and I'm probably leaving out a few ++. When I switched to the frontmount I did feel a difference more so on warmer days. As for hardpipes they will hold boost better, because unlike the factory rubber hoses they will not exspand. I'm sure someone can do a more in detail answer... Mike, Tozer?? hopefully I've at least gave you a general idea of what some benefits are!!

The warmer the ambiant temperatures, the more of a gain you will see from a FMIC. In warmer climates it's not unusual to see a 30rwhp or higher gain. In cooler climates the difference is not as pronounced. As far as hard pipes go, you would not see a power gain. In THEORY you might see a very slight improvement in boost response.

The trick is to get the correct size intercooler for your application. In other words, The size and core design of an IC should compliment the amount of air that will be flowing through it. Just like the turbo housing, if the IC is too small it will create a bottleneck effect not allowing the apropiate amout of air volume to travel trhough and into the intake. If the IC is too large fo the amount of air traveling, then the air will stay inside the IC loosing a great amount of air pressure.

For BPU (stock turbos or small single) I recommend going with the Apex-i IC kit or the small GReddy unit. For large single turbos I would go with the 4-row Greddy or Blitz units.

Just my 2 cents...

For BPU or small single, don't forget the underrated HKS Type-S

Mike,

When you say warmer ambient temperatures do you mean figures above 30 degree Celcius? It seems to me that the stock intercooler I have right now is pretty for the reason, among other things, it has a shroud around it which allows the air to be "rammed", as it were, through the same.

In my case I went with a Greddy 4ROW. It has better pipe routing and is a bigger heatsink for absorbing burst of heat. Remember an intercooler is as much heatsink as it is radiator! I can't say that it gained me power but it certainly didn't hurt it. Tuning with an AEM at the same time it was installed it wasn't possible to do a back to back comparison. I can say that on a hard pull the temps seldom climbed more than a degree or two according to my datalogs on stock twins and now on the T-78 too. It's probably a bit big volume wise for stock twins but with an AEM I was able to modify the stock sequencing for better response anyway - big gains in the midrange! Once it's full\pressurized you're rolling.

One thing to consider - will you be upgrading to a single later on? If so you may to consider an intercooler suited for the turbo you're going to rather than what you have now. A big one might hurt your spool a little on stock twins but won't choke a single later on. I didn't notice it but others might <shrug>
