I recently had a 30k mile service performed at the Toyota dealership and replacing spark plugs was included. I am running around 17psi boost and I asked the mechanic to gap the plugs at 35 vs. the stock 40. Is it okay to run these stock platinum plugs at 35 or do I need to replace them w/ high performance aftermarket plugs? Thanks.

I WAS running standard plugs/standard gap....
ie. the Platinum 1.1mm ones...

Then, I put in the BKR7E's - 'cos I decatted,
I gapped at 1.1mm again.

All this time I've had a slight hesitation at
~6,000 under HEAVY loads.

on advice from a Soop owner - put in PFR7B's
(Platinum, gapped 0.8mm, the higher heat range
= Nissan Sunny GTiR plugs)

Starts/Idles perfect but now NO HESITATION....

Only problem now is....
THERE'S NO REASON TO BACK OFF AT ALL ! ! Big Grin

THANKS.

Sorrrrrrreeeeeeee,

most unprofessional.....

It was ~5,500 PLUS RPM and when I was at
Santa Pod ie. about 2/3rds along the 1/4 mile.
[ie. 2nd turbo, FULL WACK !]

I suppose it was only really above 70-ish mph too
that is, when the engines starting to 'labour' a
bit more ?

Less noticable on street 'cos never really pushing
it THAT hard - except Motorway (=highway!) when
being VERY naughty Wink

It usedto feel like a slight 'stutter' or
sort of hesitation, nut I wouldn't have thought
it was a misfire ! !

BUT, as I said, on advice, I closed the gap from
1.1mm down to ~0.8mm (and went BACK to platinum)
and no lurch, no stutter, no hesitation.

Any Use ? ? ?

FatS.

( ps. don't know boost...... no guage...YET ! ! Eek

I KNOW, stupid, but I'm only de-cat and Mongoose
and other owners reckon ~1.0/1.1 at best by feel
of it.

BUT, even so, it was at whatever my MAX boost is
= ~1.0/1.1 Bar ? ? ? )

what the hell are racing plugs? aside from the conductivity of the metal... there isn't a damned difference between them. unless you can show me the difference on a dyno sheet... you must mean the "4 pronged ones"

Don't cheap out on a cheap item such as plugs. Go out and get plugs that are 1 heat range colder than stock. It doesn't really matter whether they are platinum, copper or iridiumsince the only difference is the amount time that they will last. Set the gap to .32 as a STARTING POINT. Each car is different and will need a different gap to run its best. The idea is to have the largest gap possible while still making sure the car doesn't miss. If you are lazy, just keep em at 0.32 and be happy. You probably won't miss with that gap.

Get some NGK3330's or better right now. Cars with BPU can't reach full potential without a set of decent plugs. With normal plugs you'll get high speed misfire at 17 lbs of boost aslo I know all engines are different depending on how it was taken care of but you could do some serious damage to that motor if safe modifications are not performed at the same time horsepower mods are done.

no matter how much chaos life brings me just knowing I've got 285/30's is very theraputic.
