If one was rebuilding a 5M motor with boost in mind, what would be the basic formula? What am I missing? Maybe some eloboration on these items so that someone would be sure not to miss anything. THANKS MUCHO
Low compression pistons. Honed cylinder walls. Metal head gasket, block and head milled. How much change in compression are we talking about with a thicker MHG? Race-prepped rods? Shotpeened. Anything else? Crank? Re-something I'm sure, but I don't know. Actually, I have no idea what needs to be done down there where it turns. More fuel, duh. Head port and polish? How much does this usually cost? Are there different levels of PnP? Obviously new seals and gaskets all the way around. Lightened flywheel? Approx. cost? Can anyone recommend some good shops here in Austin to have the machine work done? Am I missing anything? Am I crazy? I know someone will say "Go with the 7M!" but I don't want to. I've already made the investment for some of the 5M goodies. |

You're not crazy. But you have asked some questions that come with more than one answer. I for one like the 5M\6M engine. I also believe in higher compression with boost. If that is a way you want to go you will need better ignition timing in the way of a HKS EGC. Dean Marcum has been talking about re-producing these and hopefully it will be before the end of the year. On my engine I will be using stock rods prepped as well as anyone can for high boost. Will they fail? Don't know yet but I want to find out. It depends a lot on what you are wanting for your car. A little more performance or a street killer? For pistons just go with factory Toyota pistons. RPS has proven to me that they are fine even in very high performance applications. Try asking very specific questions and do as much research as you can.

I suggest you go here, and contact Aaron Garney: www.rabidchimp.com
He's putting together a very cool turbo kit for the Mk2, and he knows quite a bit about the 5M/6M and 7MGTE as well. Good luck! Stephen http://www.internetmediastudio.com/supra |
