Hi everyone,
My Supra has 185,000 miles on it. It's automatic and has the 5MGE engine with a Limited Slip Diff.
At speeds below 80mph, at any RPM, the car rides smooth and is fairly quiet.

As soon as it hits 80mph, it engages in a terribly loud noise that increases up to about 90mph and then stays the same volume-approx. 125db. The car is at about 2k RPM at 80mph and about 3k RPM at 90mph. The car gives feedback through the gas pedal that is a rough vibration and the steering wheel has some feedback as well, but the car is stable. It feels like its coming from the front, but the sound is so overpowering that I can't tell. The sound is like off-road tires going fast on a freeway where those annoying grooves make that obnoxious sound to wake people up. The car used to glide up to 90mph like it was nothing (2 months ago), now it struggles to maintain anything above 80mph. I thought the differential fluid might be the problem because it has probably never been changed. I changed it, and it was black, but changing it did not help this problem. It only made the differential quieter and smoother off the line. The Les Schwab people said my tires looked fine, no visual evidence of any problems and said it could not be related to alignment or unbalanced tires. I assume a bad Wheel bearing would sound awful at any speed. So, I really have no idea what the problem is. Murphy's Law says its the auto transmission, the most expensive part. Please help me figure this out. You guys seem to be the gurus, so I hope I'm in the right place. Thank you in advance.

Check out Reg Reimers SONIC supra site (Supra Owners Network In Canada) He addressed this issue with his 7Mgte MK2. He found that a worn sleeve in the strut was causing the vibration at/above 80mph. There is a repair option but I dont remember the details offhand.
