I am trying to disassemble a lsd differential out of a '89 supra turbo. I am having trouble getting the side gear shafts out of the differential carrier. Mitchell 1, mitchell book and the factory manual all show the side gear shafts being held in by snap rings similar to those that hold most cv axles in. The instructions those sources give is to remove the side gear shafts. By that I assume that they simply pull out like above mentioned cv axles do. Well, I hammered cold chisels inbetween the flange and the carrier without any luck. I then made an end for our 10# slide hammer that bolts onto the flange just like the axle does. Still no luck. Before I waste much more time beating on this thing I thought I would try this source. Is there anything else holding those things in and is my assumption that they must be "simply" pulled out correct? Thanks for your time.

Well, I haven't had my Supra diff apart yet but...

The Stub axles on the front differentials of GM "K" trucks are held in with snap rings similar to what is shown in the TSRM. Occasaionally, one will refuse to come out. This is due to the snap ring hanging down on the shaft too far and getting stuck. I've found the best way to take them apart is to have one person pry between the stub axle and housing with a large prybar while a helper hits the face of the stub axle with a large hammer. This has the effect of centering the snap ring. After a few blows, they always pop right out.
