short throw shifters suck. dont miss a gear!

i'd stick with the SOGI hack job. i love it. i've driven cars w/ short shifters and hated them. they're good for anything but aggressive driving. its too easy to miss a gear.

Now your saying the complete opposite of what I've heard about the real short shifters compared to the sogi mod. Which one is it is it good or does it just suck and is a complete waste of money?

Give me a couple months and I'll tell you.. I will be buying a short shifter for my R154. Let's face it: I can't afford a V160 getrag for my swap, and I probably won't do one for a couple years after, if at all.. so it's R154 for me, and with the R154 or W58, I need less shift throw/travel.

Actually, I want a short shifter because for my purpose, with the 2JZ swap, the 1JZ bellhousing is supposed to be shorter than the 7M's, so when it is equipped on a 2JZ the shifter is supposed to sit a LITTLE bit further forward [or so Arnout has told me] and spacers on the tranny or a short shifter helps this.. otherwise the shifter will sit too far forward. Personally, I like the SOGI hack job, but I would rather have something to actually reduce the throw than just shortening the length and not changing anything having to do with the fulcrum point.
I would think that there would be more missed with the SOGI mod than there would be with a REAL short shifter.. because with a real short shifter, you are not only reducing the throw [less travel than you are used to, so if you shift like normal, you are actually putting the shifter where it needs to be with less effort than it would take with a stock shifter], but you are also replacing the stock bushing, which has a tendency to screw up your shifts as well. This is recommended to be installed with some white lithium grease and "broken in", but I've heard that the results are great.

in medic's case, i can see the use of a short throw shifter, but (and this is my opinion of course) i hate them. when driving aggressively you're more likely to miss a shift, whereas with the SOGI job, the throw is still the same, and if you just replace the bushing, it feels like a world of difference.

everyone has different opinions. get one, if you like it, then great! if not, sell it to someone, i'm sure somebody will buy it if you cut the price a little. i've driven numerous cars with short throws shifters, and when i was romping on them, well, lets just say it sucked.

even DR. jonez hates them, if i recall correctly.

if you get one, post a reveiw back here on it!

The sogi mod is great!
I have had no problems with it, as long as you get the new gasket and bushing, otherwise there is a lot of vibration.
also put the stock know back on, but you can do what you like

heh, yeah i forgot to mention that i cut the stick down, shaved it down (in order to make it the same thickness) then re-threaded it for the stock knob. looks/works great!

The good thing about our supra is that they come with a short shifter you just dont know it. All you need to do this is an aftermarket shift knob and vicegrips. first remove your shifter make sure to leave the car in neutral. then place it on ground in front of the tire bring down the hand brake role the car aver the shifter. When the tire is directly above the shifter put the vice grips on the silver part ofe the shifter and rotate rotate the shifter untill the black rubber inside brakes. now remove the silver part from the black part cut off as much rubber as possible from the siver part now reinstall the shfter on your car and just put the aftermarket shift nob on the silver part. You dont have to worry about boot sag because it will hold do to the shifter being shorter.

My version of the short shifter is great I go a lot less miss shifts. It also makes you feel where you are shifting that way you know when you have a good shift and when you have a bad one.

I'm gonna do the hack sogi shifter mod (since so many people swear by it, and I'm pennyless haha). On sogi.com they suggest replacing the bushings, the white one on the end and the black one but it says to use the "green truck bushing"??? I was wondering if anybody has the part# for that "green bushing" since I have connections at toyota so I can order it

thanx in advance

I went to this sogi.com and i Found it to be entirely worthless. It's in some other language and doesnt appear to have anything to do with cars. Second...is it just me or does the stock shifter on the mk3 look like you could play baseball with it? Mine is a monster. I went to suprasport.com. Is that the only short shifter out for our cars? That would be hard to believe considering how rediculously large the stock one is. I'm not talking about just the knob. The shifter itself is taller than golly green himself. I've got a 1990 non turbo awaiting gte swap. Help me out guys... Thanks

http://www.supras.com then click on 'sogi', it's not actually "www.sogi.com". Yes, the stock shifter sux, I currently did the 'sogi shifter' and I haven't really driven the car that much but so far I like it.

odd- all i did to devise a short shifter is buy a w58 shifter from a junkyard for 25 bucks and i used a sawsall to cut the thickest part of the shifter. i shortened the barrel of the shifter by about 1 and a half inches and then cut a washer to fit on the underside where the rod goes into the rubber. i used a mig welder and welded the washer to the bottom of the barrel and to the rod going into the thick part of the shifter. then i welded the seam on the upper part and the lower part- aside from smoothing it with a grinder and priming it- oh also the smell of burning rubber from the weld on the dampener section. took about an hour and for 25 dollars works well. as long as i keep my shifts crisp and correctly placed i havent ever missed a gear. it leaves less room to just jam it in the direction of the gear but you should know your shift pattern before you dog a car anyway. i used the stock knob, no rethreading, and the stock bushing, used on top of that. in a year it hasnt broken or cracked and i had it out for 3 months doing an engine rebuild so i had plenty of time to inspect it. i kept the stocker so i can go back and also if i f%@#ed this up i wouldnt be at toyotas mercy. i think the short shifter is fine all in all.

thats far too much work. just break the top off, cut it a little, grind it down, and die some threads on there. done.
