I have a 1990 turbo and im trying to change the clutch. I never took a transmission out of a car and am having trouble getting the transmission to unbolt from the back of the motor. How many bolts hold the bell housing to the motor? And how do you remove the bolts that are higher up(like between the firewall and motor)?

i'm not quite sure how many bolts, but i think around 7-9. As for getting the bolts up top, use long extensions and a few wobblies to get up there. I don't know about you, but i could get my hands up there to feel where they all were. Then I just guided my dad onto them and he took them off.

and you have to either unbolt the pressure plate or remove the clutch fork before the transmission will come off.

Yeah...hehe. If you don't open the inspection plate and undo that fork, you'll be stuck with a tranny that is about 1" away from but still attached to your block, and you will probably have a really dumb look on your face. Confused Big Grin

There are eight bolts/nuts and the two starter bolts so ten total. I didn't have a problem with my fork, but that doesn't mean you won't.

To get the top bolts I zip tied two wrenches together, jacked the back of the tranny up so that it would rock the engine away from the firewall. Removed the intake and EGR. It took me 2hours to get them unscrewed.

I still think extensions and wobblies would be easier. It only took me around 45 minutes to get the tranny pulled. Then another hour or so to get it back in there. Which every way you do it, both would work.

I had that look on my face actualy it was more of a pissed off face due to the fact I was only going off bits and pieces of what I had printed from tsrm. after about 4 hours wasted yanking on it with no luck I went and bought a haynes manual and then got that damn fork out.

Damn, I'll keep the extensions and wobblies in mind nest time. Being the EGR was in my way, and I was getting pissed, I about threw it back to japan.

well, what i did with help from another mania forum, i took the rear bolts out of the crossmember on the tranny and lowered it down with a jack, and with about 3ft of extensions, i took off the top two bolts, but the starter i had to take off the intake manifold and i will be taking off the egr too, i still have yet to take the egr off yet,

i am doing this for an auto to 5sp swap, and should be done soon

Yeah I took off the upper tranny bolts by going under the hood and reaching behind the engine. Pain in the ass, thats why I took off the EGR.

A socket that has a base and can rotate the end. A wobble is usually refering to an impact universal.

Oh, one other question. I bought my 91 turbo supra a couple of days ago. What is the best way to tell whether it has the W58 or R154 tranny. Thanks

If it's a turbo, it has a R154. NA's are W58.
