Whenever I am parking my 87 supra turbo w/tems, turning a narrow radius and going slow, either side of my supra (front) will make a large "clunk" noise - depending on which way I am turning. It seems as if something in the steering "flips" over something else. Could it be the upper strut mounts?

maybe the bushings in your shocks are bad, or possibly a bad wheel bearing. maybe one of your sway bars end links is loose, or possibly a rim with loose lugnuts? heh, i've seen it happen...

Shocks are relatively new, wheel bearings are all new, sway bars are new (and tight), and lugnuts are fine (I had winter tires put on and an alignment done). Anyway, it has made the clunk noise for a long time - even before all the new stuff...

That is why I am wondering if the upper mounts are the cause. HKS has "upper pillow ball mount" replacements (noted just in case i'm not using the term "upper mounts" correctly). I believe they do wear out (don't they have a rubber centre?) and now I am wondering what happens when they do...some kind of slippage in the shock? The mounts I have are stock and would now be 17 years old...

...clunk anyone?

I have that same problem, when I back out of a parking spot or something, and I turn my wheel almost all the way, It will make a POP or clunk noise out of the front of my car, I used to think it was the tire scraping on something. But i still.. to this day have no idea what the hell it is. I'd like to get it fixed.

check your lower control arm bushings and possibly the ball joints.

Probably ball joints. Hopefully just the lower ones.

Just curious if there is any more leads on 'the clunk'-Have a 1990 w/out tems and it was clunking when I bought it a year ago at only 73k. When driving everything else seems solid and smooth.

Id have the axles, bearing, U-joints, etc. all checked out .. . my car was making a rubbing noise (FWD prelude) and they were looking at the exhaust and i was look its got 2 be with the axles or around there .. and it turned out to be the U-joints, axles were loose, and ball bearings. Great Honda Techs. that had to look at it 5 different times.

I talked to some "suspension specialists" about the CLUNK and they said they were pretty sure the source of the noise was the upper strut mounts - especially since the things have never been changed since 87 (I've changed everything else - ball joints, bushings, etc.) They said that in the upper strut mounts is a rubber bushing that gets hard and cracked, allowing for slippage...

Regardless, I should probably replace them anyhow... they are VERY old. When I do, I'll post again and let everyone know if it worked...

possibly the rack and pinion? My 90 does it when i leave this one particular parking lot fall right turn but the angle of the lot and road i think is what makes it pop. possibly a tie rod end.
