The rear differential appears to be going out on me. Getting a lot of this scrubbing noise.. sounds like bad brake pads, but it's constant. I rebuilt my rear brake calibers and replaced the pads, had the rotors machined. Still makes the scrubbing noise.. Well the other day, I was trying to accelerate and I noticed a horrible slipping feeling. And my rear end was getting louder. So I took it to Jiffy-Lube to have the Rear Differential Service done on it. Guy pulls the cap off.. and screams COME LOOK AT THIS! He holds his finger out with a lot of silver all over it. I said "What in the hell is that?!" He laughs,"Your gears man.. thats not good" Well no shit thats not good... Well I paid him.. he said, It shouldn't be that bad. Well.. that was around 400 miles ago. It's getting louder.. and worse. Sounds like a constant scrub. I just figure it's gone... no helping it now. So I found a rebuilt one on the internet for $430 (from a 91 turbo).. Just ordered it. I also called my mechanic and he says it will be around $300 if I bring him the parts.. But I am just wondering.. How hard would it actually be? Would it be a day job? Or can it be done within a couple hours. It's got that independant suspension.. Does this make it harder? The only thing like this I have done is dropped the rear end out of my 82 camaro... but thats a lot differnt it looks like. Well any and all help is great..

The TSRM has step by step instructions- http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/
How long it will take you depends on your tools and skill level. I'd say it is an intermediate type of job, not especially complicated. BD Performance -Brian |

Removal Its that easy...? I have all of the tools.. (just about everysize socket and wrenches, 2 floor jacks.. jack stands..) When I take the axles out, would I have take the wheels/rotors off? Or do they just disconnect and have enough play to just drop the differential...I've looked all over that site TSRM online and they explain things... but it's hard to piece things together.. Thanks for the help chevyeater

haha it's most likely the diff... It's going in the shop tuesday, we decided it was more work than me or my father has time for.
But anyways... What are some of the reasons thatwould make it tear up? Why did it mess up in the first place? The person didn't ever change the fluid? have it serviced? or something... could something like that make the whole rear diff. go? I just want to be sure that nothing like this ever happens again. __________________ 1988 Supra Turbo - Silver - Targa Top - Bone Stock |

It isnt known that the diff is bad just from lube specialist saying it is. There is to be a certain amount of metal when you change it. If it has never been changed, it might be drastic in appearance. The limited slip could be the problem, and not the ring and pinion. A bad ring and pinion makes a very distinct whirring noise when goes bad.
