Hey guys,
I left the Supra world a few years ago when I sold both my '87s. Twas a sad time. But now I'm back, I have flown to GA to purchase a 91 turbo (first turbo!) with 200k miles on it. I've driven it to my aunt's place in ALA to stay a few days before I attempt the big trek back to KY. Problem is, the auto tranny on it. The tranny slipped out of OD last night, and needless to say, the RPMs revved up to 4k at cruising speed (was at 3k). I pulled over, shutdown the car (it smelled hot), started it up 10 mins later, had no problem the rest of the way. However, I did notice on this car that the base of the emergency break stick was hot, almost too hot to touch. I don't remember my 87 NA doing this, but it may be normal in a 91. I have a coupla days here in ALA before I do my 500 mile trek, thinking bout having the tranny looked at. Any thoughts? Is the heat off the tranny normal? Thanks to all, and boy I am glad to be back! Well, I got the Supra home. I did get the tranny serviced before I left, along with an oil and differential change. Had to get new front brakes. The tranny did slip out of OD once close to home. I have since found out the car got a rebuilt tranny from AAMCO 35k ago. After talking to my Supra experts here in Ky (all they do is rebuild MKIII's), they suggested I enjoy the car. The tranny may run hot, and it may run hot another 5 or 10 years. Its not worth trading out the tranny. When it fails, deal with it then. I'm a cold natured person anyways, so the extra heat doesn't both me. Don't have to turn the heat on as much

Might live another 5 years might not last another 5 days... Have you checked to make sure the transmission's oil cooler is intact and functioning?
I can't imagine why you would elect to drive it until it's dead when the fix could be as simple as flushing the cooler.... and that's assuming that when the tranny was installed that AAMCO even hooked it up to begin with. _____________________________________________ Young enough to know everything, old enough to be wrong about all of it.
