so from what i understand if you had a n/a manual or automatic supra and wanted to swap it to a manual turbo you would hav to go with the r154 tranny n keep the 4.3 lsd.. but if you werent able to get ahold of r154 whats wrong with keeping the w58 and whats wrong with mixing the w58 n the r154?

what do you mean by mixing the w58 and the r154?
w58 = N/A 5 speed transmission r154 = Turbo 5 speed transmission you can use the w58 for a turbo motor, but it's not as strong. (i'm currently using one, though, at about 300rwhp) it doesn't matter which LSD you use. i personally kept the 4.3 because A) i don't care about gas mileage in the car, and B) i have a daily driver. -shaeff |

Shaeff, you ever get the feeling that the younger generations study things like entering high scores in their PSP and test messaging than harder than anything taught in school?
Additionally, the speedometer drive gears, bell housings, clutches and flywheels are not interchangeable. The shifters are however interchangeable. The W58 is a bit of a lightweight compared to the R154. The R154 is a real beast, it's heavier but also capable of holding much more power than the W58. How much power the W58 is capable of holding really depends on how well it's been treated in the past and how much shock it's going to have to endure in the future. They've been known to handle up to 400HP, but don't count on it. No need for thanks, I probably wouldn't understand it anyway. _____________________________________________ Young enough to know everything, old enough to be wrong about all of it. okay well now i just want to get this out of the way.1. Cre8 your typing is also atrocious so you should correct yourself before trying to get on someone else. 2.The reason for the improper grammar is that it creates a way to communicate in a quick and efficient manner..I also do not own a PSP, so you must not be talking about me. So please do not come bashing on me because of the way i type when you also do it yourself but you can just tell me.
now would it be smarter to upgrade to the r154 or to just beef up the w58 if you are trying to achieve around 400 hp with a turboed motor? |

My typing is atrocious? I will concede that my spelling and grammar may not be worthy of any prizes. However, they are legible, generally a quick read, and when someone asks me to clarify something I at least make an effort to accommodate.
Your method of "quick and efficient" communication may help you get along to pressing the Submit button (quickly and efficiently), but it should be quite plain to you that it's not helping us help you in the least. If you've seen me write a post using similar "language", please post a link. I do not recall it, nor can I imagine what I was smoking at the time. Beefing up the W58, while plausible, is probably not the easiest route. If you're planning on going for 400RWHP or higher the R154 wold be the best choice. _____________________________________________ Young enough to know everything, old enough to be wrong about all of it. i do see what you're saying so really the point i am trying to get across is that there is no need for dick head comments..constructive criticism sure but just chill on somethings (and yes i will admit it was hard to understand my question)
now would u have to mess with the ecu, get a different 1,or just leave it the way it was if you were to swap out the w58 for the r154? |

As long as you're going from a manual transmission to another manual transmission the only thing you may need to do is recalibrate the speedometer... unless you can find a compatible drive gear or swap the differential as well.
N/A's came with a 4.30 differential and Turbo models came with either a 3.73 or 3.91 depending on the year. The speedometer drive gear (in the tranny) is not swappable between the W58 and R154. You should also know that if recalibrate the speedo the odometer and trip meter will both still be off. _____________________________________________ Young enough to know everything, old enough to be wrong about all of it. would getting a digital speedometer be more accurate or the problem is the drive gear which cant be fixed?

The speedo isn't really the issue, as I mentioned that can be calibrated... the odometer and trip meters can't be calibrated.
You might try getting a hold of someone at www.marlincrawler.com. They're a Toyota 4x4 specialist company and they might know if there's a drive gear from one of the other R series transmissions that would work in the R154 with a 4.30:1 differential. Then you wouldn't need to recalibrate the speedo. _____________________________________________ Young enough to know everything, old enough to be wrong about all of it.
