Its deffinatly easier to take the tranny out with the motor. I have gotten the two top bolts out by laying across the enegine and reaching down with a ratchet and wrench however it took me atleast 30 mins to get them out and my arms were pretty scratched up from mashing them down there. I have read that lowering the rear of the tranny makes it easier with a wobbly extension. There is no easy way to do it though. When you go to put it back in I advise you to bolt the tranny to the motor outside the car and lower the whole thing in. Takeing those bolts out is easier than putting them back in.

Does this go with both the auto and manual? Pulling both out the same time?
