Ok, My transmission will not stay in 2nd gear when in "2". I assumed there was some sort of malfunction because while at the track I would like to shift at 6000-6300rpm, but it shifts into 3rd around 5500... I've adjusted the cable and it did make shifts more harsh, but it didn't appreciably raise the shift point.
The TSRM for the Automatic http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/at/AT_040.html makes me think that "2" really means "2nd or 3rd gear". But why would we have an "L", "2", "D", and "OD" option? It seems like "2" and "OD-off" are the same thing? So I guess my question is can anyone hold their mk3 auto transmission in 2nd gear? right.. here we go..autoboxes are very complicated and do a *lot* more than simply change gears for you. Here is a very brief rundown.
'L stands for launch and is 1st, 2 is 2nd, D is not really a gear but more of a shift control pattern and will also allow the car to go into 3rd and 4th (4th being only available as OD and if the OD buton is on). Positioning the stick just in L will keep the gearbox in 1st coninously, putting it to 2 will not let the box go above 2nd gear and will alternate it between second and 1st as revs and engine load allow it. putting it into the D position will engage the normal driving mode which will run the gearbox as normal. OD 'off' will purely not let the gearbox slipinto overdrive but will still let it shift between all 3 gears. OD 'on' is self explanatory. If you want to keep it in second until you want it to shift just use the stick shift as a manual and move it between the gears until you want them to change.. ie if you want to stay in second until 6000+ , drive with the stick in 2 until you get just below 6000 and then push to D. (it'll take a second or two to change, its not instant). Also, if you have 'pwr' or 'manu' setting this also completely alters the shift pattern and does different things to the gears. Just experiment with it and dont be afraid to use all the settings and use the stick as a manual shift. To go into all the features of the box would simply take too long. adi 1992 JDM JZA70 - Decat, hybrid turbos. http://www.jzasupra.com |

I'm well aware of how they work on other cars, but it seems on the supra "2" means 1,2, or 3. The TSRM shift schedule confirms this as it stats the 1-2 shift happens ~25mph, and the 2-3 shift happens around 70mph. If you leave it in drive with PWR the 2-3 shift happens around 68mph...

Nick, sometimes i wonder.. that diagram simply demonstrates exactly what i said, that drive engages the full auto shifting mech, power changes the shift points or pattern, and you cant go into 3rd in position 2.
