I concur with this ! And he definately is outa warranty !! The syncros ARE bad. I've found this problem on other makes of cars when they have a lot of miles, or have been abused too much. = rebuild time, cause it will only get worse. And a couple of cars got "stuck" in one gear, and you could not get it out. They drove it to the shop like that.

You always have to drive it and hear it to know for certain. But reverse whines because of the way the gear is cut. If 1st or 2nd do it, the gears could have a chipped tooth. That is just from abuse.

Dont be upset. R154 trannys arent very strong. the only thing to to, is go automatic with the powerglide. NOT STOCK AUTOMATIC!!

have you ever seen the size of a R154?? put it next to a borg-warner T5 out of a crustang or a camaro. I have hammered on the trans in both my turbo cars and no probs. Im not sure what they top out at but if the w58 box will hold 400 horse what do you think the R154 will hold. and beside the powerglide is only a 2 speed. and in stock form they are junk. build the crap out of em and they are super tuff (but still 2 speed)
