I figure, the only purpose of a torque converter is so you dont have to engage a clutch when you're at a stop light, right? Is there a way you could hook a clutch up to a automatic transmission and just engage the clutch when you stop? Then you would get better gas mileage and you could rev up off the line. Any ideas, comments, or is this just a stupid idea?

Thats not the only reason for a torque converter no.. it allows extra torque from the engine to be transferred to the launch than would normally be available on locked transmission launch... hence the term torque multiplier.
Someone correct me if im wrong. adi 1992 original JDM JZA70 2.5tt 'Limited' - Decat, hybrid turbos. http://www.jzasupra.com |

quote: Yes that is what it does. The stator inside redirects the fluid motion. It has groves with a check ball on the side, that will grab one way(accelerating). The other way, it will slip. Slipping alows the engine to be on while in gear with out moving. That is why there is no need for a clutch, the stator will free wheel. In Tressel we trust. |
