Hi, I am new to this forum and I have a 89 NA 5sp, I bought the car with a spun rod bearing and never got a chance to drive it till about a week ago. The rear end sounded like it needed brakes, like the wear indicator was rubbing the rotor, kind of like a scratching noise. upon further investigation I found the noise was eminating from the differential. there is no slop in the gears just a scrathing noise that sounds like it is comming from the side oil seals/bearings. How much should I pay for it to get rebuilt? could I do it myself? (I rebuild motors often). Any one had this problem and what was the cure.
thanks (sorry for the long post)

Did you check the fluid level?

Try draining it and replacing it with synthetic.

I did that last weekend. It made the gears quit down, but still that scratching noise, Could it be my tulip joints?
