wel hi ppl i just got my second supra i still have an old one in the garage whitch has BHG since the body is fair and car is automatic i chose not to repair it, but last week i came around another supra and couldn't resit buying it. its 87 T/targa 5spd around 160k, well looks nice clutch is sliping big time so i need to replace it, i got price quotes as follows:
OEM clutch $379, aftermarket OEM spec $230, preformace over 400$. now i went to couple shops and labor is around 400$ so if any one has any sugestions what is the best to use and shop prices too, also i am thinking about rebulding engine right away too since i have already experience of blowing one, but it will all depends how fast i will sell my other car (95 civic) since i need money to fix up supra, so i would apreciate if you would tell me what price you paid for clutch instaliation as well as head gasket instalation w/head resurfacing + recomended repairs that goes with it

I work at a Toyota dealership. Pulling the trans in this car isnt like doing it in an old 5.0. Ive had the trans on the ground in 20 minutes in a 5.0. Keep in mind I do have expierience. I can do it in an hour(getting it out). But that isnt the labor rate. If you dont plan on 500 horse, I would use the Toyota clutch. If your doing it in your driveway, plan on all day. Otherwise, plan on paying something like up to 4 or 5 hours of labor.

1987 Toyota Supra

Past:
1990 Mustang GT 1988 Supra
1988 Supra Turbo
1989 Supra Turbo-threw a rod, kept turbo for current ride
1987 Supra, 1988 Supra
1991 Maxima SE, 1981 Chevette(yes im serious)1987 Taurus
1981 Celica GT(the first car)

It took me a good day to do it, but i was successful.

1. Try to degrease it before you start; im not afraid to get dirty, but at the top of the tranny, it can get nasty, nasty, nasty.
2. Take the top bolts out first, i could reach them with a super long extension, a universal (wobbley), and ratchet. You cant see them, go by touch.
3. Use your best judgement on when to support the tranny with a jack.
4. The clutch is bolted to the flywheel, a fork attatches to the clutch, and the fork is attatched to the transmission. You have to open the side panels on the transmission and remove the fork or clutch in order to seperate the tranny from the block. Take a look at it closely, its difficult to explain. (I got a free transmission when I bought my shortblock because the junkyard mechanic couldnt figure this out;)
5. Watch out for spilling fluid. Maybe drain the transmission first.
6. The clutch came with an alignment tool, but it fits right on the splines of the shaft/ its kind of useless. I found that my repair manual was unspecific and could only be used as a general guide. mad My procedure differed slightly from what the book said to do, with no consequences.

Fix it yourself or don't drive it!!

How hard is it to change a clutch in a Supra? When I was doing it on my Ford Bronco II(manual shift 4x4), I could do it by myself in 4-5 hours.

I'm willing to trade my 1988 4Runner for a 1988-1992 Supra (prefer Turbo) and manual tranny.
