Hi guys just had my supra for a month, and am confused about the transmission. The tranny make noises such as the ball bearing in a can which I anticipated. But not only that, I also makes a rather loud thud whenever I do a quick shift up gear. This happens even when the car is stationary, eg. with the clutch depressed and I slam it into gear I could literally feel the bang throughout the car body.
And the other thing is when I'm driving in gear and step or let go of the gas pedal abruptly, there would be a slight clunk from the tranny and I could feel there's some slack in the vehicle movement, as if the car slides back/forth a little if you know what I mean, somewhat similar to my land rover defender. I know the supra getrag is not the smoothest of transmissions, but I don't know to what extent its considered normal I'm so clueless about this one Can anyone please help me out? |

I don't know if it helps to know that other people have some of the same symptoms but my 6 speed tranny clunks going into gear even from the line. I've only had it since June so it's still pretty new to me since I don't daily drive it. In any case, the car only has 24K miles on it so unless the prior owner was a complete shifting fool, I'd expect my tranny is still in pretty good shape to be a reference for you.
When I first got the car the thuds concerned me a lot. Also, it's notchy, especially going into 2. I searched on Supraforums for notchiness but didn't really find much about it. Only one or two people had posted anything (that I could find) but I decided from what I found that the notchiness was normal. Now I'm pretty used to the clunks and notchiness. I don't have that lag/slack you describe though. Hope this helps some. BTW - This post is in the mkiii section and your car is a mkiv or did you swap trannys into your mkiii? |

quote: Yep - that pretty much describes it - "CLUNK" and the car's body feels it, too, esp. for reverse and 1. I'll drive it in the next few days and let you know if I have anything to add. |

Well, I FINALLY got to drive the car again
- it's more of a "thud" than a "clunk" - the thud slightly vibrates the car but the car doesn't shudder - the thud is inconsistent, sometimes it thuds, sometimes it doesn't - I'd swear the thud was was louder, stonger and more consistent when I first got the car - I did replace the tranny fluid using the Toyota V160 right after I got the car. It still made the thud just as loud right after the change so I don't know why it seems quiter now. But I've only put MAYBE 500 miles, tops, on the car since the fluid change. Maybe it took some time to get the effect of nice clean fluid? Have you changed yours? - I didn't notice any engagement lag after engaging gear. Maybe that's a driving style issue? Anyway, hope this helps some more. |

Gee, Sherlock, how many times did you have to read it to figure that out?

yes wrong forum indeed lol
well, I haven't change my tranny oil yet but will have to soon when I reach 75k, does any toyota dealer carry the v160 fluid? because I'm in a small town here. About the noise, mine is inconsistent too. sometimes it doesnt thud, but most of the time it does. I played wround with the tranny trying to figure out the thud and when it does happen, it kinda feel like as if somebody bumped on the car |

Skool, it's unlikely that your Toyota dealer carries the V160 tranny fluid. None of the local dealers here had any in stock and I'm in a populated area. It's kinda pricey for tranny fluid, too. Curt at Elmhurst will hook you up for a decent discount. You'll need two of the containers - don't remember their size - but I think you need two. FWIW, sounds like your tranny is fine. When Supraforums came back up I searched for "getrag" and "clunk or thud" and found LOTS of info. Try that and it should set your mind at ease
BTW - I know what you mean about where you live. I lived in Indy for awhile and I know its pretty remote in W. Laf. Lots of cornfields and pig farms, not many trees. Flat, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, yuck |

I have an 89 turbo with R154 (No getrag) and have those problems as well. I hear a clunk or a clink actually when I take out of gear, slow down, and put back in gear. I also feel that when I punch the gas my car goes a little back and forth, like it has way more power than Its giving. I think its the clutch. I'll get back to you guys about that after I change it next year or whenever I have money.
