The manual transmission can withstand more horsepower than the automatic.

Fix it yourself or don't drive it!!

Auto is better for 1/4 mile. More consistency. You of course have to beef up the internals of the tranny...

Agreed. A planetary gearset shifts without losing engine speed, and with out loosing load/boost.

I still don't understand why an auto is better? I've ALWAYS been under the impression that manual is better. Especially off the line.

Thats great news, because I have an automatic. How exactly do you "beef up" the insides?? I'm planning/hoping to be pushing 300-400 hp. What will I need?

nothing.. your stock gearbox should be fine for that power.. 300-350 no problem , 400 may be pushing it slightly. go for an autobox upgrade.. a lot of companies do it.

I only know companies in the UK which will do a custom job.. or this one www.torqueic.com which do an auto transmission upgrade for the A342E used in the JDM JZA70... again based in the UK.

A properly built auto will usually smoke a standard transmission. Most factory autos are not for performance, they are soft shifting and soft shift scheduling.

Alot of the MKIV guys had problems w/ level 10. www.sound-performance.com does auto upgrades for mkiii's to handle all the power you need.

Also, auto's allow you to build much more boost off the line and you don't loose boost between shifts. Pretty much just point and go...

Check out Sound Performance in Chicago, I hear they do great work on auto trannies. And their prices are reasonable too from what I understand.

Put in a powerglide. Hehe one shift and gone. This two speed tranny is what a bunch of pro cars use. I believe Buschur Racing uses one in their DSM.

An auto is better for 1/4 mile racing because you don't lose boost when an auto shifts. The boost holds as opposed to a manual.

Thats the real reason why the auto is faster.

I think that the automatic is better just because it can shift faster. Other than that I don't see how a auto can beat a skilled manual driver. If you hold down on the gas while you're shifting, you wont lose boost. Plus a manual you can rev your engine up before you go. Doesn't that make sense?

High performance auto tranny's use high rev stall converters to allow them to rev their engine at the line and make boost, just like a manual can. As for the bit about the Powerglide, yea go for it. That is, if you don't plan on driving your car on the streets. A two speed slushbox like that would be terrible for daily driving but of course if you set it up for the track it would be great. I believe several drag Supras actually utilize the Powerglide, but there again they are race only cars. If it was me I would just go to a nice shop like Sound-Performance and have them do a basic upgrade on the tranny you have.

Been a fan of the Supra since I was 15. Slaved over a grill to save up for my dream. Then that damn movie came out and all hell broke loose.
