Do '97-'98 supras come with the denso "air fuel sensor"? I saw some article about Toyota (and a few other japanese car companies) using a wide range oxygen sensor, calling it an "air fuel sensor" rather than an oxygen sensor. From the article it seems like it's accurate from 12:1 to 18:1 afr, which would be much more helpful than a narrow band sensor, if not as helpful as an ntk or bosch wideband. I think the '97+ supra might have it because one of the CEL codes is listed as being for "air fuel sensor."

article

if anyone wants to check (someone with a calibrated wideband), an obdII reader from a local parts store should list the air fuel sensor's voltage. it won't be as accurate; it will be between 0 and 1v, and is supposedly just the actual voltage from the conntroller in the ecu divided by 5. it's not linear to afr but the curve is in that article. with a 0-1v output, a few points should be approx.:

.5v, 12.5:1
.6v, 14.0:1
.66v, 14.7:1
.7v 15.5:1
.8v 18.5:1

i mean, if it's somewhat accurate, it doesn't seem like it would be hard to get a reading from the stock computer. the sensor produces a really small current over a .3v potential difference generated by the stock computer... getting a voltage from that current should be all that's necessary to get a reading. it looks like it'd be pretty accurate from 12-12.5:1 to 18:1, so a rich reading one could be sure was lower than 12:1 instead of the not so useful information that it's less than 14.7:1.

I would doubt that. If it has a 0-1v output, isn't linear in relation to AFs and nobody has noticed this yet, its probably a narrowband. People have been trying to convert the narrowband voltage to concrete AFs for a while but it just isn't accurate enough to tune with. Do yourself a favor and get a wideband. Check out www.innovatemotorsports.com. They see to have a really great product capable of datalogging for a lot less than most WBs.
