I have heard that in order to estimate how much HP you have at the crank with a manual transmission, you multiply an addition 15% to amount of RWHP due to drivetrain loss. Is it also true that for Automatics, it is around 25%?

X = Crank Horsepower and Y = RWHP

Here's the formula for you guys just incase your curious. 15% loss for 6-speed and 20% loss for autos.

To take crank HP and get RWHP use this formula

.15(x) - x = y <---for manuals
.20(x) - x = y <--- for autos

We will use Mark's supra and I'll show you what it looks like. Mark's car make 1060 HP at the crank so it wil look like this.

.15(1060) - 1060 = 901 RWHP

To take RWHP and find crank HP this is the formula you use for a 6-speed...

y / .15 - 1 = x

or

y / .85 = x

for auto's it's

y / .80 = x

So if we take 901 this is what it will look like..

901 / .85 = 1060 HP

Hope this helps.

My mechanic compared his dynojet dyno with his engine dyno difference and it was %12 on a 6 speed. I don't have details on the engine dyno used.
