Hey guys. I had my transmission take a dump on me. I think the input shaft bearing failed, tore up the seal, and leaked out the gear lube. I found a replacement transmission from a parts car, but it did not have a provision for the ABS sensor on top of the tranny. So, I was wondering what was involved with a transmission rebuild, and if it is worth research time and money.
The car is a 1988 N/A Supra with a W-series transmission. I've never done a transmission rebuild, but have rebuilt a few engines, and have precision measuring tools. I also have a press, a gear separator, snap ring pliers, and some other specialty tools.
Never having done this before, do you think I can do it without investing a lot of money into specialty tools I'll probably never use with anything else?
Thanks.

I have done it before. Its intimidating at first but I don't see any reason why you couldn't accomplish the feat, provided you lay everything out neatly and organized and take your time with it. You can always consult a professional mechanic(befriending one is always a good idea, just hang around a shop and talk when buisness is slow) should you encounter a snag.
When I did it, I took the trans(5spd) out of a toyota pickup, took it down, re-installed the syncros and seals, put it back together, and back in the vehicle in less than two days(worked from morning to lunch, took lunch, lunch to 5 or so, break for the day, then morning to lunch and was done) I did have an old timer looking over my shoulder most of the time I was doing internal work so that was a big confidence boost.
Just take your time with it. You can do it if you have a good sound mechanical ability, and are organized.

Kewl! I do have access to a press, and have used a gear splitter. Know a good source for internals and seals? I know I need to replace the front input shaft bearing and I'd like to replace the syncros.
Thanks a bunch.
