i'm going crazy with this supra. slowly and surely i'm going over everything and repairing / replacing stuff.
i just rebuilt my turbo and man it sounded great. that is until i took it out on the road. then it started missing and stalling again. i figured it was becuase i took a short cut and didn't properly clean the intercooler. i started to take off the intercooler to clean it and again i get a cup full of oil out of it as soon as i loosen the bottom clamp. i did find out that the last owner had the wrong dipstick and the car is way overfilled with oil, by about 4-5 quarts. i'm also thinking maybe the pcv system / egr valve maybe. other than that i'm at a loss. when i rebuilt the turbo, i did it twice just to make sure i did it right. sorry for the long post. Robert,
Did you rebuild the turbo, or have a shop do it? Is it balanced properly? The missing/stalling could be from something simple like a large boost leak. Check your diagnostic trouble codes. Here's how: http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/TechTips/engine_error_codes.aspx Tell us what you've got, if any. If you're 4+ quarts of oil over, you've got serious issues. You'd likely be popping seals everywhere due to over pressurizing the system. I'd drain the oil, do an oil change, and put 6 quarts in there. (it's ok to run .5qt over) The oil in the intercooler is either from massive blow-by (probably not the case) or from the old turbo being completely toasted. When a turbo dies, often times it'll pour oil into the intercooler pipes. You can clean them out with some gasoline or paint thinner. (same with the intercooler) The EGR doesn't ever see oil, all it sees is exhaust gasses. |

i've got no trouble codes. i've noticed that i still have an exhaust leak at the elbow where the downpipe connects. i also need to get some new ic piping clamps as a couple of them are just plain hose clamps and i don't think they can hold the seal. also i'm going to have a shop down the road balance my turbo as i might have screwed that up. there is no play in my turbo when inspected and everything looks sound. i am also going to do an oil change and add just the right amount according to the TM.
i was told that if the egr valve malfunctions it can cause the vacuum to pull so strong as to cause excessive blow-by. ??? |

Exhaust leaks and IC pipe leaks will cause your car to run oddly. Get those fixed, especially the IC pipes. I assume the shop balancing the turbo works on turbos? Not just any shop can do it.
No idea about the EGR valve, as I've never had one on my car. |

Ok, so i deffinately screwed up the balance on my turbo and the compressor wheel was rubbing against the housing. I decided to just get a new "Rebuilt" one. My new turbo should be here this weekend.

Very nice. Rebuilding a turbo isn't an easy thing to do.
