Everytime i exit a freeway ( going from 50-80 mph) my car turns off when i get to the stop, or take it off of gear and put it on nuetral before the stop. When driving on the street and going high speed for a short period of time it does not cause it to shutdown but does drop the idle down to 0.5 rpm when it should be a constant 1k rpm. can this be caused by the alternator? or my ignition system? please help.

iac or tps are very likely the suspects.

is this serious? or minor?

should be minor. cleaning or recalibrating the tps might very well fix the problem. you could also be looking at a boost leak.

What is the TPS? is that a sensor?

TPS= throttle position sensor.
i can post how to troubleshoot the iac and tps but try a boost leak test first. i would hate for you to go to all the trouble and find out you just have a loose hose or something simple. |

i just want to clear up a few things. do you have an aftermarket bov? have you checked your vacuum lines? reset the ecu recently? done any modifications recently? is it throwing any codes (ie. check engine light comes on)? seems weird that it would stall after short sprints but not after a long drive. use a battery load tester and see if the alternator is working correctly.

Complete stock the airbag light is on... and it does turn off after quick sprints and long driving. after a stop the car will turn off. Oh and thanks a lot for your help i really appereciate it.

after you test the battery reset the ecu. this will erase any stored codes. the stalling will come back if there is a problem and not just an overload of stored codes, if the stalling goes away completly then you had some stored codes which cause the problem. again these are the easy tests so we dont go to a lot of trouble and find that we could have fixed the problem in 2 minutes.

I noticed my 94na turns off the injectors completely in these deceleration cases (noticed this using an afr gauge). They turn back on at around 2k RPM - - Toyota manual says this 'resumption rpm' is variable, depending on ECT, A/C clutch, and STA (neutral?). I'd be curious to see what your afr is doing - may be possible the injectors aren't being turned back on??
