I am looking at MKIV TT supras obviously with a lot of miles on them. My question is how much would it cost with labor, on a general number, a rebuild of the top and bottom end with stock replacement of everything and to include labor. And if labor is that expensive how hard is it to do your self with a Haynes?

does this rebuild include new block and head or just 'moving' parts? id say $5,000 is a good round # for a complete rebuild but cost will change depending on if the block will be replace or machined and if you need a new bare head. however just because an engine has high milage doesnt mean it needs a complete rebuild. it may only need a $500-1000 valve job or a new set of rings.

are these blocks usually just machined or replaced I know it is a case by case base but the block is bulletproof so what are the likely chances of replacing head and/or block

really the only reason for replacing a head or block is because it is warped beyond repair or is cracked. however since toyota sells fully assembled short blocks for a reasonable price it might wise to take advantage of that and just use the head you already have.
my plan is to buy a short block and use the original head and drive the car with that in it for a while and use the original block to machine and build up on the side to eventually drop in when the time comes. |
