i dont think the white smoke is bad, black smoke is what you have to worry about.

White smoke (or steam) usually signifies that coolent is getting into the combustion chamber (usually from a blown-head gasket.) VERY BAD.

If it is white smoke with a bluish tint, oil is being burnt. This could be caused from a number of things. If the car is turbo-charged it could be from a bad turbo (the seals going bad w/in the turbo.) On non-turbo cars a common cause of lots of bluish/white smoke could be from an old/weak engine (oil starts getting past the piston rings and burning up in the combustion chamber.)
This is also usually a VERY bad sign.

Black smoke on the other hand,is caused from running a rich fuel mixture. The worst that could happen when running rich is fowled spark-plugs, loss of power, and poor gas-milage.
If your car is smoking you would want it to be black smoke!
