hey all, 2day while driving home my NA Supra(5spd Jap Spec) was going fine as it always does until i stopped at sum traffic lights when i noticed(car shaking, revs real low and all over the place) that the enigne was stalling, so i gave it a kick in the guts wif the accelerator and let it idle again, but still it just wouldnt idle, it went down to like below 500RPM and i had to keep my foot on the gas to prevent stall. As i was only a mile or so from home i continued on and every time i stopped had to rev the engine to stop it from stalling, when i got home i took my foot off the accelerator and it just coughed and died. I let it sit for 30 seconds and started it again and it idled fine, i then reset my ECU and took it for a short drive and it seems fine. Any ideas what could have caused this??? It was like the car had foregotten to keep feeding fuel to the engine or sumthing.

Also ive never reset my ecu before and it was the 1st time ive ever looked in my fuse box. Im interested to see what another NA's fusebox looks like inside, becuase mine looks like its missing a few, i only have 1 EFI fuse (EFI 1, i think, EFI 2 fuse is missing) and i have no ABS fuse and there are a few others missing, isnt ABS standard across all surpas??? Could sum please take a foto of their NA fuse box (up close) and upload it 4 me please, or tell me what fuses i should have for say a standard supra!!!!!

Thanx
Smile

I had this happen to my old NA a couple times. My fix was filling up with premium and running her on the freeway for about 20 min. Only thing I think of is maybe a bad tank of gas. a.k.a. ya payed for premium but got plus or reg. Might wanna try a fuel system cleaner as well. Never figured out what caused it but once the gas trick worked and once the cleaner worked.

It happens on accident rarely. More often than not it's a shady station putting 89 in the premium tanks.

Check all of your air intake hoses behind the AFM any small crack or leak will cause this. This happened on my 89 NA. I also had serious problems with a 98 Avalon which ended up costing me 600 bucks that a can of concentrated fuel injector cleaner eventually fixed.

my 94 turbo is doing the same thing. I was told its the egr valve but it wasn't now I'm trying the tps sensor. I have also tried the fuel cleaner, octane booster and all that crap. It goes deeper than that. This problem is making me want to drive it into the wall. Let me know everything you do to fix it and i'll do the same maybe one of us will fix it. You explained my problem exactly so it will only keep on doing it to you. Good luck

hey there wingless, well since the 1st time it happened to me it hasnt happened again (thank god). So i cant really help u, all i did was reset the ECU straight away, also i have a jap spec supra (since im from australia) and as far as i know the jap spec doesnt use any EGR so it cant be that. Is it happening everytime u drive it? I reckon that it was sumthing to do with the TPS or the idler thingie. Maybe next time it happens get sumone 2 keep the car idling and pop the hood and have a look at the thottle cable and idler, as i reckon mine must have slipped or sumthing, because and i aint 100% sure on this (and correct me if im wrong) but isnt the idle RPM controled by a bolt that is adjusted to achieve the lowest possible idle and the car lifts from that point when u turn the AC on etc.

Hope this helps, let me know what happens!

Cheers

Maybe your lucky and it was bad fuel but that is how mine started. Just once than it got worse now it is every time I drive it. The weird part is if I go through the gears to downshift it wont happen just when I go from third to nuetral the rpms just keep on going and it stalls. There is no check engine lights and toyota doesn't think they can find it so this sucks.

your only supposed to have one efi fuse. its the 2nd one down on the diagram that should be there. first off this is what you do. put 93+ octain in, make sure your MAF is clean take it out and swab it out or something. 2nd throw some injector cleaner in.

next make sure the filter is clean, hay who knows it could be simple shit. make sure all the vacume lines are on, and if all else fails there is a tiny screw next to the throttle plat that hits the throttle, turn it so you idel a lil higher.

Sorry its been a while but it wasn't the tps it was actually the speed sensor causing the rich conditions and the stalling at lights. hope that helps someone.
