I am looking at buying a 1998 tt w/6 speed. When I test drove the car I noticed when I would press in the clutch to shift from first to second and let off the gas I would hear 3 loud clunking noises. You could hear the noises outside the car. It only happens when I am pressing in the clutch and the car is moving slowly. I have read the other posts but it does not sound like ball bearings in a tin can. The noises have a sharp sound. What could it be? Could the first and second gears be damaged and what I am feeling is slop in the gears or backlash.

I paid $24,700. It has 48,000 miles. However the car had been in an accident (front fender and passenger door replaced) Car was side swiped. But has a perfect paint job.

Only the body panels were affected. The frame appears to be untouched (no welds or bends).
