Im due for a timing belt change soon, so i figure i'll change my cam gears and get lightweight pullies while the belt is off. I have a few concerns that i hope you guys can clear up for me.
first of all, i WONT be getting a crank pulley, only the accessory pullies, and as far as i know, that wont affect timing at all, am i right? is there any trick to getting the pullies swapped? special tool or anything? On to the cam gears, as far as i know, ONE of the cam gears directly affects the timing( and if not set up right can be off by 180 degrees), i do not know which one. the other can just be set to zero and then just worry about tuning it later. what do u have to do to make sure timing is kept at 10btdc when lining up this cam gear? lastly, how is changing the distributor timing via a timing light different from changing the timing on the cam gear? as far as i understand the timing light changes when the distributor makes a spark, to get it closer to the position where the piston is up. the cam gear, when adjusted, adjusts the cam so the piston is up closer to the time of the spark, am i right? wouldnt the timing light and and the cam gear offset each other in a way? Could i use the distributor(since im non turbo) to bump the timing bdtc instead of getting one cam gear? i am unsure, so i am asking you guys. any help would be greatly appreciated.
