i auto cross but i have only owned my supra for one month and we haven't had an event yet. i've been autoxing for about 1.5 years and will probably run the supra (1990 N/A Supra) in DSP since i have already accumulated too many points in that class for this season (i used to have a Neon). i am seriously debating whether or not to run in GS or ESP (since it is non-turbo).

Do you autoX? if so what class do you run in and do you have any setup suggestions? my supra is bone stock and i'm debating between GS and the KONI adjustables or ESP and the TEIN coilovers.

I do, I have owned mine since 98. I bought it new. I have raced in BM class and in SM class. I need some coilovers and race rubber to be competetive in SM. I have been BPU for 3+ years now. I never lost in the BM class.

Jeff

PS Get the HKS Hyperdamper coilovers.. I have heard nothing but great things about them.

I am the President of the local chapter here in Kowstail Montucky.. I autocross all over the state of Montana and some events in Washington as travel and schedules allow, mostly here locally we have adopted a Tire/Engine Cylinder classing system as is optional at the local levels according to SCCA, mainly because of the number of cars we have it makes the races a bit more challengin and exciting, but whenever I race at the larger races, regionals, etc, I am in ESP (E - Street Prepared) The the MKIII Starts in G-stock (N/A) then goes to E-Stock (Turbo) Then goes to E-Street Prepared as you ad Koni's and Eibach's, Boost Controllers and Street Tires with treadwear ratings bordering on Race Tires (Yokohama AVS Sport, etc.) Not Sure where it goes from there as I have not gotten to the Hoosier level yet but I believe with my current list of mods it puts me into a class even higher yet...will find out this year with the new hoosiers on order...

Wow, this thread sure was started a while ago. Right now I auto-x my 2003 Lancer OZ. I a month I'll be driving my 86.5 Supra NA. I'm currently working on getting it restored to good operating condition. I'll be running it in GSR at first because I don't have the money for a set of wheels and competition tires. I plan on getting a turbo on it, so then I'll be put in SM class I think.

Just bought 1987 NA Supra for $1800, let the project work begin.

First, you might want to check out http://www.scca.org/ for some more info on autocrossing or "Solo II" in SCCA speak. See if there is a regional event near you. You can spectate and meet some local autocrossers to find out about local clubs and events. Or, you can sign up and run for a small fee as long as your car passes tech inspection (bring a helmet if you want to run, the SCCA site should have details on approved ones). Usually, cars only flunk tech for stupid stuff like an unsecured battery.

Don't expect to be extremely competitive right off the bat at an SCCA regional though. It takes practice, honing skills and a good car setup to start winning bigger events. Driving fun starts right away though.

I think you were probably in the Solo I section or Club racing. Solo II isn't nearly that complicated. To run at an official SCCA meet I think you do have to join up. No drivers school or race car rental though. Not a big deal. You give them like 50 bucks and they give you a membership card and send you a magazine every month.

If you don't really want to sign up for SCCA just yet, then go to watch and meet some autocrossers. 99% of them are in smaller, cheaper more local, more "fun hobby" related clubs. None of those are well publicized though, so you have to find out about them where autocrossing folks hang out.

Good luck. Get out there and enjoy that Supra! Big Grin

You race against the clock. Usually on a course in a big parking lot or an abandoned airfield. It is a legal way to explore the limits in your car and your driving ability. It is also pretty cheap (for starters) and safe since no one is on the course at the same time as you.

Some people prefer the term gymkahana instead of autocross. I recon they do this sort of thing in Germany too...
