You heard it folks, the Government of Ontario has introduced a bill to "improve public safety on our roads". For the most part, the bill is fine, and seeks to do the right things. However, they are shortsighted in how they have approached the issue of street racing. Bill 241 includes a clause hidden about 2/3 of the way down that seeks to ban substances and equipment deemed to be racing equipment, or used by street racers from use in highway going vehicles. The list of those parts will be put together later, and there is the scary part. The Minister of Transport has highlighted "Nitrous Oxide, and other substances" in his press release, and this should be a real concern. Attached is a link to an on going and lengthy discussion of the Bill and the ramifications, including links to it and the Government of Ontario web site.
Bill 241 Supraforums Discussion Act now kids, start spreading the word as far and wide as you can, because the government can pass this as early as late January if they push it. With the election likely in the spring, they are looking for brownie points. Let's tell them that we agree with their goal, but that they cannot destroy a hobby for the majority, when only a few are the problem. Enforcement against the perpetrators is the answer, not subjugation of the masses of law abiding and legitimate owners of modified cars. Write to the Premier, the Minister of Transport, your MPP and the leaders of the opposition parties and tell them that this part of the legislation is wrong. Bob Bob G. 87T |

The key in there is that it talks about getting rid of 'substances' which the officer deems harmful or dangerous. a.k.a. NOS. Sounds like they want the power to empty your nitrous tanks on the spot if they catch you with some.
The last part refences "parts used for racing". Things like non-DOT drag slicks or side-exit exhausts. Things like that. People with air filters or MSD ignitions or even turbo upgrades have nothing to worry about with that bill. Seems like it's being blown out of proportion to be this "end all to anything aftermarket". 1JZ Shopping... |

I've done my part, I've signed the petiton and sent it to all my friends and co-workers to sign as well.
I hope to see tens of thousands of signatures. I just hope the message gets through. I feel that many Canadians just allow themselves to get walked over by our Governments and just don't voice their opinons and take stands like our neigbours in the US. I just wish Canadians had more fight rather than being so passive. |

Well, the fight continues. There is a thread in the Canadian section of supraforums as well, that contains a lot more information on the subject, and some sample letters that you can send to Queens Park. A member there will also be posting PDF versions of the letters that people can download and sign on his site. Keep checking there for new information.
The petition has reached 4900 signatures, and continues to climb slowly. I hope that everyone here can take the time to write to their MPP and keep the pressure up. This is in addition to the petition, as letters are far more impactful on the politicians than a petition. I have done a couple of interviews with the papers about this issue, and it seems they are coming around to printing articles on the bill, both the good of the majority of it, and the bad as it pertains to section 172.2. They seem interested in our opinion, and I hope that a few articles will help rally support against this section of the bill. Keep up the great work! Bob Bob G. 87T |
